Heal Sjögren’s Disease With Chinese Medicine

Healing Sjögren’s disease disease with Chinese medicine

Sjögren’s disease is one of those conditions that quietly reshapes a person’s life. It often begins with subtle signs—dry eyes, a dry mouth, fatigue that doesn’t quite make sense. Many people chalk it up to aging or stress. But over time, these symptoms deepen, and the diagnosis becomes clear: Sjögren’s syndrome, an autoimmune condition that affects moisture-producing glands and much more.

In this post, we’ll explore both the Western medical view and the Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) perspective on Sjögren’s. Whether you’re newly diagnosed or supporting someone who is, understanding both sides can open up new paths to healing.

With that being said, You are never told from a Western perspective that there are scientifically backed things you can do and thousands of years of effective treatments in Chinese medicine that can actually help you to heal from this disease, and not just simply manage it with drugs. I have been fortunate to help dozens of people to heal from this health problem.

As with everything in life though, what you put in is what you will get back. This is a law of consciousness. Many times the Western model heavily “depends” upon the doctor to do the healing. But, in my experience, 90% of what it takes to heal is done by the patient. But, it helps to have the right tools in order to heal and that is what I provide to my patients.

What Is Sjögren’s Syndrome?

Sjögren’s syndrome is a chronic autoimmune disease where the immune system supposedly attacks the body’s own moisture-producing glands—especially the salivary and tear glands. It can occur on its own (primary Sjögren’s) or alongside other autoimmune conditions like lupus or rheumatoid arthritis (secondary Sjögren’s).

I personally do not believe in the Western medicine view of autoimmunity. Thousands of years of Chinese medicine does not support this view either. A more modern view of understanding this would be in a conceptual framework developed by Dr. Robert Naviaux called the Cell Danger Response. When the body has deficiencies and has been exposed to many toxins, it begins to see this as a danger and Inflammatory processes are the way that the body tries to protect itself from these threats.

The body is way too intelligent to attack itself. The more likely theory is that due to the deficiencies and toxicants that are present in the body, this gives rise to very specific chronic pathogens. These pathogens are what are at the heart and center of what contribute to all the symptoms present in this disease. Therefore, if you remove the toxicants and you supply the body with what it needs nutritionally, healing should occur.

Common Symptoms of Sjögren’s Disease

  • Dry eyes: burning, itching, gritty sensation
  • Dry mouth: difficulty swallowing, speaking, or tasting
  • Fatigue: often persistent and unpredictable
  • Joint pain and stiffness
  • Vaginal dryness and skin rashes
  • Nerve pain or tingling
  • Digestive issues like bloating or acid reflux
  • Swollen salivary glands

Western treatment typically includes artificial tears, saliva stimulants, and immunosuppressive medications like hydroxychloroquine or methotrexate. In more severe cases, biologics such as rituximab may be used.

Chinese Medicine Perspective on Sjögren’s Syndrome

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, Sjögren’s isn’t seen as a single disease. Instead, it’s understood as a pattern of internal disharmony—most often involving Yin deficiency, dryness, and internal heat. These patterns reflect a deeper depletion of the body’s cooling, moistening, and nourishing forces.

Here are the most common TCM diagnostic patterns associated with Sjögren’s:

1. Yin Deficiency with Empty Heat

  • Symptoms: night sweats, dry mouth and throat, red cheeks, heat in the palms and soles, insomnia
  • Tongue: red with little coating
  • Pulse: thin and rapid
  • Treatment: nourish Yin, clear empty heat

2. Lung and Stomach Yin Deficiency

  • Symptoms: dry cough, dry lips, thirst without desire to drink, hoarse voice
  • Tongue: peeled or cracked
  • Treatment: moisten Lung and Stomach, generate fluids

3. Blood and Qi Stagnation

  • Symptoms: joint pain, menstrual irregularities, mood swings
  • Tongue: dusky or purple
  • Pulse: choppy or wiry
  • Treatment: move blood and Qi, relieve pain

4. Spleen Qi Deficiency with Dampness

  • Symptoms: bloating, loose stools, fatigue, poor appetite
  • Tongue: pale with teeth marks
  • Treatment: tonify Spleen, resolve dampness

5. Liver Qi Stagnation with Heat

  • Symptoms: irritability, dry eyes, PMS, headaches
  • Treatment: soothe Liver, clear heat, nourish Yin

Integrative Strategies for Managing Sjögren’s

Combining Functional and Chinese medicine can offer a more complete approach to care. Here are some practical tips:

  • Dietary therapy: Focus on moistening foods like pears, tofu, black sesame, and seaweed. Avoid spicy, fried, and drying foods.
  • Herbal medicine: Work with a licensed herbalist to customize formulas based on your pattern.
  • Acupuncture: Points can help tonify Yin, move Qi, and reduce inflammation.
  • Functional medicine and supplements: Powerful supplements that help to detoxify the body and also strengthen immune function are 100 percent necessary in order to heal from Sjögren’s syndrome.
  • Mind-body practices: Gentle qigong, meditation, and breathwork can support fluid metabolism and emotional balance. Emotional release techniques are also very helpful.

Final Thoughts

Sjögren’s disease is complex, but it’s not insurmountable. Western medicine provides essential tools for managing inflammation and protecting organs. Chinese and functional medicine offer a deeper look at the body’s internal terrain—helping restore balance, rebuild fluids, and reconnect with natural rhythms.

If you or someone you love is navigating Sjögren’s, our clinic offers integrative support rooted in both Functional medicine and Eastern wisdom. We’re here to listen, guide, and help you find a path that feels sustainable and empowering.
