Top 5 Best Gut Health Supplements

5 Best Leaky Gut Health Supplements

What are some of the best gut health supplements available in the world today? Aside from hydrochloric acid, digestive enzymes and probiotics, below you will find 5 of the best supplements for gut healing.  Below, you will find links to scientific studies as well that document the power of each one of these supplements and herbs. These are some of the most frequently used supplements that I recommend to people in the clinic due to how powerful they are at restoring good digestive function.

Ginger – This is a very popular warming/hot herb for digestion. It is very helpful for alleviation of nausea, vomiting, motion sickness, high cholesterol, indigestion, food poisoning, headaches, coughing from cold/flu, heartburn, fatigue and constipation. Ginger is also listed in Chinese medicine to help with joint, muscle and nerve pain. We now know that ginger has powerful compounds called gingerols, which can kill pain. What is most interesting is that ginger has a very warming or hot quality to it, but it can alleviate heartburn, because although ginger is thermally warm, it will help to put out the fires of inflammation due to dealing with pathogenic viruses and bacteria. It supercharges the immune system

Ginger can be run through a juicer, added to smoothies or made into a tea. Take about a thumbs worth of ginger and steep in 12-16 ounces of hot water for about 15-20 minutes, let the liquid cool and consume. It can also be purchased in capsule or powdered form. Due to its warming/hot nature, it does have the potential to be drying and can make certain problems worse. Use with caution.

Cilantro – Cilantro is an herb that has been used for a long time to help chelate or remove heavy metals from the body. Studies have shown how it has decreased lead-induced oxidative stress and accelerates the removal of heavy metals. Other studies showed how it is effective for anxiety and stress. It is also a powerful agent to help stabilize blood sugar levels. Cilantro has been shown to be a powerful agent in preventing colon cancer by reducing toxins. This is an herb that I use with most of my patients in the clinic. It is such a powerful tool in dealing with the accumulation of toxins. I suggest using it in alcohol free tincture form about 50-100 drops per day.

Spirulina – Spirulina is one of the most nutrient dense foods in the world and is packed with plant protein. It is a blue-green algae that has been consumed for a long time. It is a powerful anti-inflammatory agent that balances blood sugar, reduces cancer and tumors, reduces blood pressure, and lowers fatigue. It is a very dark green supplement and does a fantastic job at cleansing the body of heavy metals and chemicals. You can buy good quality Hawaiian spirulina in powder form. I suggest 1 to 2 teaspoons per day.

Fennel Seed – If you have ever gone to an Indian restaurant you might have seen a bowl of these seeds sitting on the counter. Fennel is a thermally warm herb that has been an important part of Indian and Chinese medicine for dealing with indigestion, digestive issues and putting out inflammation. Fennel has been shown to have anticancer, antimicrobial, antiviral, and anti-inflammatory properties. Studies show that fennel extract powerfully inhibits the growth of harmful bacteria, such as escherichia coli, staphylococcus aureus, and candida albicans. I have seen fennel seed be particularly useful in lowering the occurrence of flatulence/gas, bloating and bad breath. It is also very beneficial for constipation and diarrhea. One to three teaspoons of fennel seeds can be steeped in 12-16 ounces of water for 15 minutes. Once the water has cooled, you can drink the tea. Many also enjoy the liquorice-like taste of the seeds and chew them after drinking the tea. Fennel can be purchased in alcohol-free tincture form and capsules

Lemon Balm – This is an amazing herb in the mint family. It is thermally very cold. Lemon balm has a very special ability to soothe irritated nerves, improve mood and cognitive function, reduce anxiety, improve sleep quality, nausea, headaches, and indigestion. Lemon balm is a great aid with regards to IBS, colitis, and acid reflux. I have seen tremendous results with this herb in the clinic. Dried lemon balm can be used to make tea or it can be purchased in alcohol-free tincture form.
