Eczema

Heal Eczema Naturally with Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture

eczema

The most common reason why people make a doctor’s appointments each year is for treatment of skin problems like eczema or dermatitis.  Dermatitis is simply a general word that refers to inflammation of the skin.  It is a problem that is estimated to affect a significant portion of the population each year, from 10-30%.  It is a problem that can manifest anywhere on the body, but is more prone to manifest on hands, neck, forearm, thigh or ankle.  It is something that can affect both young and old. It is not contagious.

Chinese medicine has dealt with inflammation on the skin for thousands of years with food therapy, herbal formulas, topical ointments and liniments, acupuncture, qigong and consciousness based healing.  The best part is that it is natural, is very effective and has no side effects, which cannot be said of drugs or topical medications.  Rather than simply just giving a drug or topical steroid or moisturizer, Chinese medicine seeks to discover what is really at the root of the problem and then treats the root.  Even in the cases of allergic reactions, various forms of allergy elimination can be used to retrain the immune system as to what is truly harmful and what is not.  As it mentioned in many of my articles, it is important to know that dermatitis or eczema should be healing on each of the Five Levels of Healing in the Body.   So if you have tried endless things in the physical or 1st level of the boy and haven’t explored the other levels of healing in the body, this may be what you need in order to truly heal.

What are the different types,  forms and symptoms of eczema?

Different forms of dermatitis exist and are highlighted below:

  1. Atopic dermatitis – itchy, red, swollen and cracked skin that may emit a clear fluid and can thicken over time.  It is most likely to start during childhood, affecting commonly the hands and feet.
  2. Allergic contact dermatitis – This is the same as the above, but is brought upon by a specific allergen, many including exposure to heavy metals, chemicals, foods and environmental items.
  3. Irritant contact dermatitis – This is caused by chemical irritants.
  4. Stasis dermatitis – This results from insufficient venous flow, mostly in the legs.  The skin may weaken or ulcerate, itch or become swollen and feel like you are being stabbed or pricked.
  5. Perioral dermatitis – The type is found specifically around the mouth, nostrils or eyes.
  6. Seborrheic dermatitis – Cradle cap (yellow, flaky) in infants and dandruff is what characterize this type of skin inflammation.

Characteristic in dermatitis is itchy, red, swollen, flaky, blistering rashes that occur on the skin.  Many use the term of eczema and dermatitis interchangeably. Other less common types of eczema exist, but these represent the majority of cases in which we see it manifest in most people.    Chinese medicine identifies health problems by patterns and then we treat the pattern.  The most common patterns are Damp Heat, Toxic Heat, Wind-Damp-Heat and Blood Deficiency with Wind Dryness.

Since this is a form on inflammation in the body, one of the first and most basic we need to look for are the dietary things that cause the most inflammation in the body and remove them.  Also we need to add in foods that help deal with inflammation the best.  Clinically, by implementing some simple practices the physical body can begin to heal

An amazing tool that we use in the clinic to determine what exactly is sitting behind the physical manifestation of eczema is through Nutrition Response Testing.  It test for heavy metals, chemicals, food sensitivities, pathogens (virus, bacteria, parasites, fungus) or physical scars that may be impeding healing.  After this is determined, we also test for exact whole food supplements and doses to initiate the healing process.  You don’t have to be here locally in order to get this testing done.

Electrical Healing of Dermatitis and Eczema

Acupuncture has been very successful at treating inflammation of the skin.  Acupuncture is backed by science and is not some weird metaphysical thing.  The meridian system is a part of our electrical system, the same way our nervous system is.  Acupuncture points are found along connective tissue divides in the body.  Connective is piezo-electric, which means that it is a fantastic generator and conductor of electricity.  When the body is stimulated through acupuncture points, the power essentially get turned back on, initiating more flow of oxygen, blood and inflammation modulation chemicals from the brain.  This, in turn, helps you to heal.

Emotional or Consciousness Healing of Dermatitis and Eczema

The Chinese have said for thousands of years that emotions are one of, if not the most potent cause in determining health.  Negative emotions can literally cause this condition.  Chinese medicine treats the whole person and this is a part of healing.  The main pathological emotion of the liver is anger.  Healing the liver is a critical part in helping people with this condition.  Therefore, when we look more closely around the time that this manifested for the first time, often there was an activating event, memory or experience that triggered this issue.  Inna Segal, in her wonderful book The Secret Language of Your Body, mentions the following emotions that contribute to this:

“Dermatitis—Irritated, unsatisfied, frustrated. Feeling anger inside that’s being pushed through the skin. Constant criticism and judgment of self and others. Feeling uncomfortable in your own skin, unsure of yourself. Experiencing negative and depressing thoughts and feelings about yourself.

Eczema—Feeling unaccepted, needing to hide and suppress your feelings. Aggravated by your experiences with others. Erupting with anger when you don’t get your way. Holding your breath. Experiencing a sense of stagnation.”

Do any of these things apply to you?  Do you experience anger in your life more than you would like?  By learning consciousness based healing techniques, you can let these negative emotions go and you can heal.    This is often the most neglected part of health, but can be the most powerful.
